Alexander the Great was the king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon (northern Greece). He was born in Pella in 356 BC and tutored by Aristotle until the age of 16. After his father's, Philip II, assassination in 336 BC, Alexander, who was only 20 years old at the time, was declared king of the kingdom.
During his rule, the kingdom of Macedon knew its greatest glory and spread. After an unprecedented military campaign through western Asia and northern Africa it was one of the largest empires of the ancient world, stretching from Greece to north-western India.
Alexander died on either 10 or 11 June 323 BC, in the palace of Nebuchadnezzar II, in Babylon, at age 32 probably by poisoning. According to Plutarch, an ancient Greek historian, a few days before his death, Alexander entertained admiral Nearchus and spent 2 days drinking with Medius of Larisa. After these events, Alexander fell sic and day by day he was getting worse, until he couldn't even speak.
According to another ancient Greek historian, Diodorus, Alexander was struck with pain after downing a large cup of unmixed wine in order to honour Hercules. For the next 11 days, Alexander was weak, he developed a fever and died in agony.
