Play the way vikings did with these handsome Tafl game pieces!

Of course, those who know Tafl games need no explanation, but I will tell this in short:
Before the arrival of chess, the so-called 'Tafl' or 'Hnefatafl' game was by far the most popular board game in Northern Europe. Introduced by the viking raiders, it thrived from the 5th to 10th century. It's a very strategic war game with the distinctive feature of two unequal armies. The attackers (dark pieces) outnumber the defenders and their king (light pieces) by 2 to 1, but that doesn't mean the latter are weaker. Both players have different goals: the attackers try to capture the king; the defenders must get the king to safety by getting him to the board of the game. On the internet, there's a lot information available regarding tafl games and the many locally different variations.

The process of making these game pieces is a mixture of modern and old techniques. First I designed the models with 3D-software. Next I order them to be 3D-printed in the highest possible resolution. Based on these prototypes, I make reproductions by mold-and-cast technique. This hand-made process adds an artisanal and original touch, no piece is exactly 100% the same.
The pieces are made of so-called 'porcelain plaster', a harmless and odorless acrylic powder for the production of porcelain imitations. After drying out, a outlet coat of paint and varnish is applied by hand. This makes them very much stronger and smoother than regular plaster pieces, but they are by no means unbreakable, so please treat them with tender loving care. Pieces can chip or break if dropped or treated roughly.

The pieces are stylized to look like early medieval anglo-saxon and viking warriors. The king wears the famous Sutton Hoo helmet.
Size of the pieces: the king is approx. 6 cm in height, the warriors 5 cm. The set consists of 16 attackers, 8 defenders and one king, for playing on a 9 x 9 board game. Please note that the game board on the picture is NOT included, but shown for presentation purpose only.
