This cup was made on the potter's wheel. Once the bowl was formed, it was faceted by slicing away at the side wall. While the piece was still wet, I brushed it with Sodium Silicate and forced dried it with a heat gun. As the Sodium Silicate got exposed to the heat it created a glass like surface on the exterior of the cup while the inside remained soft and pliable. The cup was then stretched into shape from the inside. This pressure caused the hard skin on the outside of the piece to crack and tear giving it an aged look.

After firing it once, the inside of the cup was glazed with a food safe, durable glaze. The outside of the tea bowl was sprayed with a combination of glazes, slips and ash in an attempt to emulate the surface of wood fired ceramics within the constraints of an oxidation kiln.
Intense sanding was done to ensure that the tea bowl is smooth to touch and pleasing outlet to drink out of.
Like most of my pieces, this piece, fired to 2167 F, is dishwasher safe and great for everyday use and only grows in beauty and value with repeated use.

This tea bowl sits wonderfully in one's cupped hands making for a very intimate experience.
