This small straw hat has a pork-pie crown with the characteristic rim around the top (most easily seen in the last photo). The crown is a little bit higher in the back than the front, giving it a graceful slope. It is made of a very fine blue straw and has been finished at the edge with a co-ordinating plaid ribbon in green, blue, red and black.
Picking up those colours is a feather flourish at the left front made from vintage black and red rooster tail feathers. The feathers are in excellent condition, very smooth and shiny with no broken or damaged spines. At the base of the feathers is a Scottish Thistle and Sword brooch with a round cabochon in it's centre. The cabochon is a marbled green that reminds me of Malachite.
At the back of the hat are two streaming ribbons also in the same plaid. There are horsehair tabs for pinning to the head, as well as an elastic that goes under the hairstyle. These aid in keeping the hat in place, and can be coloured with a marker to match your hair. This hat is meant to sit on top of the head and measures a size 7, or 22 1/4". The inside is unlined, but finished with a matching Petersham ribbon.
This style from the 1860's would look great with a dress in blue, green, or black. Hat's like these were very popular with younger ladies in the early 1860's, although by the end of the decade they were adopted by women of all ages.
