The single-seat fighter was the main fighter of the Regia Aeronautica (Italian Air Force) in the early days of World War II. The aircraft was developed by the Fiat design bureau under the direction of Celestino Rosatelli.

CR.42AS (Africa Settentrionale) - modification for use in North Africa. It was created in the fall of 1941. This modification had dust filters located on the carburetor air inlet. It also installed underwing suspension for aerial bombs (50 kg and 100 kg).
