I made this coffee mug on the potter's wheel in my Kansas studio. I decorated the surface using the Sgraffito tecnique. Sgraffito is the process of applying layers of contrasting slip to unfired pottery, and then scratching to reveal parts of the underlying clay. In this case I applied 4 to 6 coats of black slip on white clay. After the mug had been fired once, I glazed the inside and top edge in a hemlock glaze and covered the black and white area with a shiny clear glaze. I then fired the mug in oxidation to about 2100 degrees Fahrenheit. I applied mother-of pearl luster to the black and white area and fired the mug for a third time.

This mug will hold 22 oz. of your outlet favorite beverage. It is 4.25 inches (10.8 cm) tall and 4.25 inches (10.8 cm) in diameter.

Hand wash to preserve the luster.
