Despite a 20th century Soviet legacy, the soul of Kyrgyzstan lies in its
vast skies, open landscapes & silent mountains.
It is here, where rare snow leopards roam icy peaks. It is here, standing
at the crossroads of the great Silk Road, that 3,000 years of trade can
still be felt in colorful & vibrant outlet bazaars. It is here, that the largest
collection of petroglyphs in Central Asia can be found. It is here,
where the Kyrgyz yurta may be seen dotting the landscape. It is here,
where the 6,000 year old, Asian tradition of hunting with eagles can
still be observed.
And,
it is here where horsemanship is prized above all.
This adorable doll with an impish grin, stands freely in his pointed
toes, wooden
carved boots. Just 7", he wears heavy woven pants below his felt
robe, known as a kementay. His ak kalpak is by tradition, white.
In life, clothes of the nomad are practical. They could be, however,
extremely adorned, with furs & trimmings of silver, tassels, pearls
and the like. Clothing, language & physical features, all allude to
the origins & heritage of the Kyrgyz.
Made in the Soviet Union, when found with tags, the name Kirowz
or Kirquiz might be seen.
Kyrgyzstan proclaimed independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
A nomad saying ~
ʻA man should move because the sun, moon,
stars, animals, fish - everything moves
and only the land and dead creatures
stay where they are.ʻ
