This charming English Mastiff porcelain dog figurine was made by German porcelain manufactory, Sitzendorf. The dog has a smooth cream colored coat with a brown patch at the shoulder and on its rump. Its muzzle, eyes and paws are finished in black. The dog has been modeled in a seated position and has an attentive pose. Its head is cocked slightly to the outlet side and its feet are planted squarely in front of its body. The dog's collar has been finished in blue.
This figurine is in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks or repairs and has a high gloss finish. It should be noted that there is a small fleck of material beneath the glaze on the dog's left side and a firing/vent hole beneath the left front leg, both of which are related to production and are mentioned for accuracy. The dog stands 3.25" tall as measured to the tip of the ear and is 3.5" from the tip of the nose to the end of its tail. The figurine is 1.5" across at its widest point. The underside of the piece bears an impressed Sitzendorf crown mark along with the number "26092". The piece is also marked with a blue Sitzendorf stamp consisting of the letter "S" surmounted by a crown.
This figurine would make a wonderful gift for an English Mastiff owner or might be the piece you have been looking for to round out your own collection of porcelain dogs. Very cute!
A note on the maker:
Porcelain was first produced in the town of Sitzendorf in 1760 but did not begin in earnest until the latter part of the 19th century. The company became well known for its Meissen style lace figures, and also produced a number of other fine porcelain figurines. Ownership of the factory changed hands several times until production ceased in 2012.
