In each unique rug, Master Weavers Esmirna and Manuel Lazo use traditional methods for every step of the process. They start by sourcing their wool locally, from shepherds in nearby villages. The wool is then spun by hand, often by the Lazo's themselves. They formulate dyes from only natural materials that they hand pick from the local area: Cochineal beetles give the yarn its red hue, indigo turns it blue, walnut and pecan shells create brown thread and pomegranate surprisingly makes it yellow. Their hand-built looms allow them to create a weave that is very tight and packed, giving the fabric a soft, plush feel and adding to its durability. Incorporating the curved design of the Sol Stamp, a departure from typical geometric imagery, is complicated and requires the Lazo's special skill and experience.

I first got to know Esmirna and Manuel at the local market in Oaxaca, Mexico where they were selling their own beautifully crafted handwoven rugs. As a weaver myself, I was thrilled to learn about the unique techniques they use from start to finish in their work.

Since then, I have had the great privilege to get to know the Lazo's. Through our mutual love of the fiber art tradition, we have cultivated a friendly and equal partnership. Working in collaboration we have been able to weave the Sol Stamp, that started as an inspiring sand impression, into the expertly woven rugs you see here.

I am honored to work with the Lazos and share these beautiful rugs with you.

Peace out, and in

Kristin
