It takes millions and millions of years to form stalactites. Their formation begins with a single drop of mineral rich water that continuously drips from the roofs of caves. When the first droplet falls down, it deposits behind a lean ring like structure of calcite. Over a period, layer over layer begins to settle on top of each other, and gradually, the minerals precipitate superfluous substances that form the diameter of the stalactite. Once the agate nucleus is complete, quartz begins to form on the outside surface.
