Over 120 years old! This silver plated pedestal basket is an elegant reminder of past customs. They became popular in the 1880s as a luxury gift for a bride on her wedding day. Manufacturers referred to these as cake or fruit baskets. The term "bride's basket" is a modern term. The baskets were popular as "the gift" for weddings until 1905.
This lovely basket is etched with leaves and flowers on the plate. The mark on the bottom reads Osborn & Co Lancaster Pa Warranted Quadruple Plate 878. It is c. 1890-1900. It has one small dent on the plate (it is most visible outlet in picture six). The rim of the plate and the base are both a tiny bit bent in places. It is not perfect, but you have to look hard to see its imperfections. Given it's age, it's in beautiful condition.
A lovely piece to display food for special gatherings or showcasing your baubles.
