This is a Colorful Old Beaded Bandolier from the Zulu tribe of South Africa. It is a slung sash style worn over the shoulder. Beaded bandoliers have been part of a repertoire of dress used by isiZulu speakers for 200 years. This particular form of bandolier links indigenous use and their particular military associations among the colonists. The isiZulu-speaking (and other) troops drawn from the Natal Colony in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, in which the black troops are shown wearing bullet-stocked bandoliers. This particular bandolier enabled a particular form of assimilation of flat, beaded bandoliers into ‘Zulu' dress practice. Zulu bead works are recognized by the fact that the motifs are treated in a very symmetrical way. The colors and designs of these necklaces are very symbolic and specific to the area in which they are made, so that can be understood by others in the village. A wonderful Zulu Bandolier to adorn your home or to add to your collection.
