Partially completed Thousand Triangle or Thousand Pyramid Quilt in Silk. Also included are 280 additional triangles already basted on paper/postcard triangles, as well as 79 other triangles already sewn into strips (see photos). The large piece which has been sewn together measures 60" x 27". This is the piece shown in Photo 1.
Also included are about 30 triangle pattern pieces cut from mostly postcards. By piecing them together, I can see that they were sent to Elizabeth Lyons in Montrose, Pennsylvania. In doing some digging on Ancestry, Elizabeth (Dean) Lyons was born in 1806 and lived in Montrose with her husband and eleven children. She died in 1887. She had a daughter named Mary Elizabeth (Lyons) Lathrop. My guess is Mary is the one who began this quilt.
Just a few of the silks are tattered; the rest are intact. If you look at the backside of the triangles outlet, the paper/card stock they are sewn onto is from the 1880's, so we can assume that it was started sometime near then. Again, see photos. Also included are a few extra pieces of antique silk.
Don't you wonder who started this, and why they did not finish it? Was it the elder Elizabeth, or her daughter Mary Elizabeth? Perhaps even Mary Elizabeth's daughter worked on it for awhile. Wouldn't it be great to complete this after more than 100 years in the making?
We make every attempt to describe and/or photograph our items, but as this is antique, we may miss something of importance to you. So please ask questions or for more photos; we are happy to oblige.
