This small oil painting is one of a series that feature a single sycamore leaf against a simple background. In these paintings I explore the shape and subtle color variation of the leaf and the intereaction of leaf and shadow. In version 3, the color is deeper and more saturated. The rhythm of the leaf edge gives the painting a sense of motion. The leaf is rendered with strokes of paint set down with a palette knife, sometimes laid thick and sometimes scraped to show the canvas texture.
