Born in Charleston in 1779, JOEL ROBERT POINSETT was a prominent South Carolina politician who served in numerous state and national public offices. A man of many interests, he was particularly accomplished in the fields of agriculture, horticulture and botany, While serving as the United States' Minister to Mexico, POINSETT was captivated by a local plant with bright red leaves , called “nochebuena” that was used to adorn the churches of Taxco during the Christmas season. POINSETT sent the colorful plants back home to Charleston and the popularity of the plant spread quickly throughout the region. By the 1850's, the “nochebuena” plant was renamed the “poinsettia” in honor of POINSETT and had become a popular symbol of the holidays in households throughout the Southern United States.

Our BYERS' CHOICE MR. JOEL POINSETT is dressed in the contemporary clothing styles of Charleston in the 1850's. He carries in his left hand a bouquet of poinsettia flowers and pine cones. Our MR. POINSETT is in fine vintage condition with just a very tiny hole in the leg of his trousers outlet that cannot be seen easily, as his long coat covers it. He measures approximately 13” tall. Is MR. JOEL POINSETT the BYERS' CHOICE Caroler that you need to enhance your collection?
