Iconic Samsonite case that would have been part of a six piece Streamline set for the well travelled lady of the 1950s. This outlet would have served as a carry on bag to hold pajamas, a change of underwear and some toiletries.
Samsonite revolutionized luggage in vinyl made to look very much like leather in a varied shade of brown (called Colorado Brown for one of the company's home cities) and the seam edges are topstitched rubber (also meant to look like leather) for durability. The latch closures, lock, and hardware are brass, with the metal part of the frame painted matching brown.
It opens to reveal two compartments lined in a plum colored faille fabric protected by covers. One side has a hard cover that is held in place by leather tabs with snaps, open it to find a nice rectangular mirror. The other side has a soft ruched stretchy piece that closes with a metal bar that attaches to two hooks. All of this is intact and not torn, though there is some staining as I have shown in the pictures.
It measures 15” long X 10” tall x 7” deep at the bottom and 5 1/2” at the top. Overall condition includes scuffs and wear consistent with age (and travel) as you can see in the photos, but shape and function are all solid.
Marked Shwayder Bros. Samsonite Detroit Denver, it also has a leather travel ID tag attached to it from Rendezvous Travel Service of Pinedale Wyoming. Key not included.
