Original artifacts excavated from the Civil War battlefields around Fredericksburg, Virginia outlet. They are typical of what would have been issued to or used by Federal artillerymen during the Civil War. There are two Federal “Eagle” buttons worn on the short shell jackets. At the center are the remains of a pocket knife. There is a kepi chin strap buckle and a friction primer used to fire the main charge of an artillery piece. The iron ball for was a canister round or could have been loaded inside a shell. The two bullets are for a .36 and a .44 revolver. The remaining artifacts were used on other leather accoutrements. Unless noted the artifacts are all brass except for the bullets which are lead and had paper cartridges when issued. The lead has oxidized in the ground giving them a white patina.
The view was reprinted from a photograph taken by A. J. Russell on May 2, 1863 of the 1st Connecticut Artillery on Stafford Heights, Virginia. Located across the Rappahannock River from Fredericksburg, the Heights were used to shell the Confederate defenses in town. This action was part of the Chancellorsville Campaign and is considered the “Second” battle of Fredericksburg. The Federal forces were able to take the town and move on the Salem Church were they were eventually driven back.
The artifacts come with an 8” x 12” riker mount box as shown. We are packing the artifacts separately so they don't scratch the glass. The black felt behind the artifacts in the picture is over soft cotton batting which allows the relic to settle into it and allows for the different thicknesses. Take the pins out of the side of the case and lift off the lid. You can place the relics however you like.
All of the artifacts are guaranteed to be original as stated. A hand signed and dated “Certificate of Authenticity” will be issued by Collectors Frame with a photograph and description of the items purchased.
Please see our "About Collectors Frame”, below the reviews on the front page, for more information on the framing and artifacts.
