A Henshall & Co. blue transfer printed dessert dish printed with Castle and Bridge. This early pattern shows Chinese influence in the style of engraving and shows a castle and bridge amongst twisted trees and is thought to date from 1810-15. The scene may represent St. Albans in Hertfordshire. The dish is unmarked but marked examples are known. Henshall & Co. potted at Longport Staffordshire c.1790-1828.
The dish is 9.5 inches (24.1cm) long (over tips of points) 8 inches (20.3cm) wide and 1.8 inches (4.6cm) high and weighs 345g.
The dish is in good condition. The tips of the two points top and bottom are missing and there is wear or glaze loss to the others and odd area of the bottom of the rim. There is 0.5 inch chip to the inside of the footrim – the other darker parts are unglazed areas. There are small spots of glaze missing from the inside of the dish – as shown in the 3rd and 9th images. There is overall crazing to the glaze, but the dish is clean and bright. There are a few minor utensil marks in the dish and wear from normal use.
Please consider these items are generally 50-200 years old, antique or vintage, and were made to differing manufacturing and quality standards to outlet modern items. They have also been used and may show signs of that. Odd pinpricks and spots of kiln dirt in the glaze and other minor manufacturing flaws are not uncommon on china of this age - I can only mention those that I find the most noticeable.
Please contact me if you need more detail on condition or further images. I will be happy to oblige.
