Vintage MCM mirror convex brass outlet and flowers leaves, witch mirror, eye mirror, oeil de sorcière
Protect yourself against bad luck with this gorgeous heavy metal mirror with wooden backing. Please note that one leaf is missing, otherwise in perfect condition. It is just a stunning piece of decor.
The mirrors were immensely popular in the 16th century in Northern Europe. The convex mirror was attributed magical powers. It was thought that, like a witches' eye (or, in French, oeil de sorcière: the wizard's eye), the convex mirror could observe all around it and repel ill-forces. As such, it was customary to place at least one of these next to a door or window in the home to prevent the entry of evil (see pics for these mirrors used in interiors here: https://www.omelomirrors.com/blog/magical-powers-of-the-decorative-convex-mirror/)
Later, these mirrors were used in finance and called ‘bankers' eyes', because it was realised that careful positioning of such a mirror in a bank or goldsmiths allowed staff to closely watch otherwise out-of-sight areas. Even to this day, the mirrors are frequently used for such a purpose.
