“Ode To The Great White North” was created in 2016 outlet inspired by winter hikes in and around Lake Orion Michigan in. Addison Oaks, Orion Oaks and Independence Oaks County Parks as well as Bald Mountain State Recreation Area. The trails weave around lakes and open pastures, across streams and brooks, over hills and through densely packed woods. Additional inspiration came from the story of Dick Proenneke, One Man's Wilderness, and Jack London's Call of the wild.
Initial sketches were drawn on the trail and transferred to the canvas and as ephemera was added the imagery was simplified. A revelation occurred when cleaning the bed of my pickup truck and I removed the spare tire.
The image of the Grizzly bear was scanned from an old National Geographic magazine from my collection and modified digitally with a color separation and color half-tone pixelation and symbolizes the dangers of the wilderness. The isolated mountain was an article of newsprint and signifies the stark nature that winter brings. The magenta areas were masked and spray painted allowing the color and imagery below to bleed through. These hash marks mirror the pattern of the tire tread in a simplified manner and reflect how some natural spaces are fenced off with warning or no trespassing signs. Lastly the tire was rolled through black acrylic paint and rolled across the canvas signifying how mankind has rolled over and either tamed the wilderness or destroyed it.
The brown bear of North America has several subspecies such as the Grizzly and Kodiak. They're territory stretches from Alaska in the west across the Yukon and the Northwest Territories and south down into the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Luckily the brown bear's conservation status is of least concern but it's numbers are declining because their natural habitats are being encroached upon.
The painting is medium size format, 18” wide by 18” tall, on stretched canvas. The artwork is stable and can be shipped safely.
