Kanjira hand drum: Ancient outlet Carnatic percussion instrument

The Kanjira or Khanjeeri is a South Indian frame drum that belongs to the tambourine ancestry. It has been used in India for many religious and other ceremonies for centuries. This percussion instrument is made of the jackfruit tree wood and uses the lizard skin or the goatskin. The word Kanjira is derived from the Tamil words 'Kanja' or skin and outlet 'jiri' meaning small jingling anklet that gives it the meaning of skin with bells. It is used mostly in Carnatic music.
