Over the years I have had many students who did not feel confident in selecting colors for their jewelry projects, so I developed a class to help people get over their fear of picking the wrong colors. This bracelet was a sample to demonstrate first choosing a favorite color, then choosing a second color that went well with the first but was not in contrast, and, finally, selecting a third color for contrast. The seed bead accent could be in a matching or contrasting color. In this bracelet I had first chosen the Fuchsia AB, then the Violet AB, and the Indicolite AB for contrast, with gold-lined crystal seed beads to accent all of the colors. Here, the Indicolite AB functions as lines of separation between the Fuchsia and the Violet, letting each be seen and appreciated individually rather than having the Fuchsia overpower the Violet as it would have if they had been next to each other. Using a dynamic contrasting color can bring life to a design, as it does in this simple, striped pattern of vibrant crystals!
Note: In the class, as students were choosing their colors, I discussed the basics of color theory (not too in-depth because that can be intimidating at first) and talked a bit about the relative "visual weight" of colors using art by Piet Mondrian, Frank Lloyd Wright, and others as examples. We also explored different ways of using three colors in a design, such as ombré, or shaded (usually from light to dark), and using two colors that contrast with each other joined by a third, neutral, color (such as red, blue, and white). It was really a fun experience to look at color selection in different ways and learn to love the process!
