Vintage Seven Joys of Mary Chaplet

I am delighted to offer this vintage rosary chaplet dedicated to the Seven Joys outlet of the Blessed Virgin Mary also known as Franciscan Crown Rosary or Seraphic Rosary. Striking, substantial and handsome, the rosary dates from the late 1950s. It recalls the seven joyful episodes in the life of Mary the Mother of God. The practice originated among the Franciscans in early 15th-century Italy but devotion to the seven joys of Mary is also popular with the Cistercians and the Annunciades of St. Joan of France. The devotion was granted many indulgences by different Popes, becoming the most heavily indulgenced devotion in the Church. Within the Franciscan Order, this devotion has been promoted by Saint Bonaventure, Saint John Capistrano, and Saint Bernardine of Siena.

The round beads are made of glass paired with silver tone steel components. The handsome clinched crucifix holds a nicely grained black wood into which an INRI banner and molded corpus are pegged. Much of the silver plating of the corpus has worn off exposing the brass base metal with warm golden patina. The crucifix is securely wire wrapped to the rosary making it unlikely to get detached. An open work Notre Dame medal is attached to the rosary.

The following are the mysteries of the Franciscan Crown:
• First Mystery
The Annunciation: the moment when Mary learned from the lips of an angel that she would bear the Savior.
• Second Mystery
The Visitation: Mary's trip to support her cousin Elizabeth.
• Third Mystery
The Nativity of Our Lord: the birth of Jesus in the most humble of circumstances.
• Fourth Mystery
The Adoration of the Magi: the mysterious visit from kings of the East.
• Fifth Mystery
The Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple: the joyful family reunion after three days of panicked separation.
• Sixth Mystery
The Appearance of the Risen Christ to his Mother: confirmation of all that Mary had known to be true about her divine Son.
• Seventh Mystery
The Assumption and Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven.

HOW TO PRAY THE FRANCISCAN CROWN

Begin with the sign of the cross. Each decade, highlighting one of Mary's joys, begins with the Our Father and is followed by ten Hail Marys. Two Hail Marys are added after the seventh decade to make a total of seventy-two. The 72 Hail Marys commemorate the seventy-two years the Blessed Virgin Mary is supposed to have lived on earth. In conclusion, recite an Our Father and a Hail Mary for the intention of the Holy Father.

The seven decades need not be recited at once, but the single decades may be separated provided that the whole Rosary is said on the same day. It is not necessary to meditate on the mysteries of this Rosary, it suffices to say the single decades in honor of the respective mystery.
