The fire in this opal is multicolor in a small patch pattern outlet. Cut in a freeform diamond shape, it would make a nice pendant stone or a very interesting ring stone.
The fire is very lively and changes as the opal moves, or as the direction of light changes.
The opal weighs 4.86 carats and is 13.2 x 12.7 x 4.1 mm. I cut it from rough that was mined in Coober Pedy, Australia.
Prettier than the pictures. The appearance in the photos is a fair representation of the opal in bright incandescent light. (The white spots are reflections of bulbs.) It's difficult to accurately capture opal fire with a camera.
Opals look different depending on the type and intensity of light. They look their very best in sunlight and incandescent light, but they also look very good with halogen and some of the newer LED lighting. Traditional fluorescent lighting is the poorest, but some of the newer fluorescent bulbs have phosphors that are pretty good for viewing opals.
