Schott Zwiesel Art Glass Vase, Zwiesel Florida Vase, Heinrich Loffelhardt Glass Vase, Controlled Bubbles, German Art Glass,Mid Century Glass
This listing is for a stunning vintage German modernist art glass vase with controlled bubbles. This turquoise blue mouth blown glass vase with silvered bubbles was created by Heinrich Löffelhardt for the German company, Schott Zwiesel, most likely in the 1960's or 1970's in the Bavarian Forest in Zwiesel, Germany. The vase is part of a series called "Florida" and is a call to the blue waters and surf of Florida. The vase is not marked but it is well documented to be from Löffelhardt and Zwiesel. It stands 7-1/4 inches tall and measures 3-3/4 inches in diameter at the widest point and weighs 2 pounds and 6 ounces. The vase is in very good vintage condition with respect to age and use and is free of any chips, cracks, or repairs. There are some surface scratches in one spot as noted in the last photo but it does not detract from how the piece presents. There is also some minor light shelf wear on the bottom. This is a beautiful and colorful little piece of art glass that will be a wonderful addition to your home decor or mid century art glass collection.
Heinrich Löffelhardt (B 1901 D 1979) was a designer of ceramics and glassware who had a decisive influence on industrial design in Germany in the 1950s and 1960s. After graduating from high school in 1920, he started an apprenticeship at the Heilbronn silver goods factory, Peter Bruckmann & Sons. Löffelhardt later trained as a sculptor with Georg Kolbe in Berlin in 1924. From 1937-41, he worked at the Vereinigte Lausitzer Glaswerke under it's artistic director Wilhelm Wagenfeld. After the war Wagenfeld arranged for his appointment as director of design at Landesgewerbeamt (District Trade and Craft Offices) in Stuttgart. He succeeded Hermann Gretsch as artistic director of the Arzberg and Schönwald porcelain factories and succeeded Wagenfeld as design director of the Jenaer Glaswerk Schott and Genossen in Mainz and its affiliate in Zweisel. He is best known for his innovative glasses for domestic and utility use and for a range of heat resistant glass, including a tea set, cups and saucers, plates and bowls. In 1976, Heinrich Löffelhardt received honorary membership in the Association of German Industrial Designers, and in 1978, he was elected Honorary Senator of the Stuttgart Academy of the Arts. He died in 1979 in Stuttgart.
