I am offering the 1902 EDWARDIAN VULCANITE VESTA Antique Matchsafe Edwardian Edward 7th Vulcanite book shaped Vesta case.
Original browned vulcanite vesta matchsafe, book shaped and opening both ends with a very detailed profile of King Edward VII in an oval portrait with a crown above.
made c. 1902 to commemorate his coronation.
The reverse, Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense with E.VII in the middle.
Both openings open and close well, and the striker runs down the side opposite to the spine.
The coronation of Edward VII and his wife Alexandra as King and Queen of the United Kingdom and the British Empire took place at Westminster Abbey, London, on 9th August 1902.
Many of the novelty figural vesta cases come from the 1880s, when smoking became fashionable. By 1920 with the invention of the petrol lighter, these faded from popular fashion.
Measurement: Measures approx. 50 outlet mm x 30 mm and approx. 12 mm deep.
Condition: very Fine for its age. Please see photos to note it has browned but the browning is uniform (I,e. not blotchy). Please see photos to note both side panels have bowed but they are secure. It may need a light polish but otherwise good condition. See photos.
The Match safe you see in the photo is the Match safe you get.
Fantastic for your craft projects, altered art, Steampunk, Scrapbooking, collage art projects or just a great addition to your Military patches collection.
