GEM INFO
Labradorite is an unusual mineral. It is a grayish-brown stone that has a beautiful bluish-green iridescent play of colors caused by internal fractures in the mineral that reflect light back and forth, dispersing it into different colors. This effect, known as labradorescence, gives Labradorite its appeal and fame. Moravian missionaries discovered it in 1770 and named it for the region in Canada where they found it. In the nineteenth century, deposits found in Russia made labradorite a more popular choice for jewelry.
Pearls are the only gems created by a living organism. Any freshwater or marine mollusk can form pearls. They build their homes around themselves by secreting layer upon layer of smooth, lustrous "nacre." Shape influences a pearl's quality, grade and price. A pearl usually maintains the shape of its irritant, so pearl farmers insert round nuclei in oysters to try to create perfectly round pearls. Only 5 to 10% of the cultivated pearls grow to be even and round. Pearls are classified as being spherical, symmetrical or baroque. Pearls were most likely the first gem collected and worn by humans.
