This antique book on heraldry is entitled 'A Short and Easy Introduction to Heraldry Part I A Concise Dictionary of all the most useful Technical Terms in the Science of Heraldry.' As to publication, it is undated, however, there is a letter to the reader at the beginning and that is dated June 27, 1781. I therefore take this book to be late 18th century. It is a wonderful insight into heraldry and its symbolism. At the front of the book there is a piece of paper stuck down that shows 3 feathers and Ich Dien. The front few pages are dedicated to beasts, fish and their terms; crosses and partition lines, metals, colours and lines, etc and then the dictionary part follows outlet. The most wonderful part is that the letter s is represented by an f; the paper feels like old manuscript paper; it's leather covered and; the book measures just 16x11cm approximately. Of course this would be a wonderful gift for anyone who produces heraldry, but it is also fascinating from an historical view point, how things are written, hierarchy of the time and the wonderful images. This means that it would be suited to many people.
Condition: front and rear covers marked and scratched; corners bent and very small pieces missing; foxing throughout; marks and pencil marks throughout; some colouring in of letters with pencil (not very much); pieces torn from a few pages but these do not appear to be from the writing or images; spine in good condition; dark mark to page edges and on front cover - this does not cover any writing.
