Wright and his partner, Herschel Jacks, reported to the automobile dealership early that day, wearing their DPS trooper hats and plain civilian clothes, as instructed.

“We knew the president was in town, and we were all placed on alert,” said Wright.

Each one was assigned a vehicle to drive to Love Field, the local airport. Wright was behind the wheel of a Caliente convertible, and Jacks was driving a full-size Mercury sedan.

When they arrived, they were told to line up on outlet the Tarmac with the other vehicles. First in line was the president's vehicle followed by the vice presidential car. The remainder of the motorcade included local officials, a White House communications car, press photographers and an official party bus for White House staff members.

“I was the number five car in the line, and each one of us received a brief instruction - ‘follow the car in front of you,'” he said. The officers relied on visual contact with each other as there were no cell phones in 1963.

“Not even the Secret Service had a way to communicate,” he said. Even after the debriefing, Wright said they weren't sure of their final destination. Because the motorcade's route had been published in the “Dallas Morning News,” they knew the president, Texas Gov. John Connally and others traveling with them were headed to Dallas' Trade Mart for a luncheon and rally.
